Growing up in the DC area could be complicated depending where you lived, your race and your socioeconomic status in the neighborhood. Rivalries and neighborhood clashes occurred but only pride was harmed. When I went a way to college at UMES I discovered that the rivalries advanced from neighborhoods to cities. I was unaware that P.G. County and Baltimore hated one another. There would be an occasional fight on campus between guys from Baltimore and guys from P.G. County. What I found remarkable was the alliance formed by these two groups. P.G. County guys and Baltimore guys didn’t like each other, but they both hated guys from D.C. and they formed a NATO alliance that was prepared to fight D.C. anytime at any place.
